Lightscape 3.2 tutorial

Processing parameters

The last thing you do before Lightscape starts running is to set up the processing parameters. Lightscape will use these values to determine how accurate your lighting simulation will be.

Wizard

Lightscape comes with a very powerful wizard that will calculate all these values for you automatically. To start the wizard, select Process>Parameters from the menu and click on the Wizard button.

These calculations are based on an overall quality index (from 1 to 5), lighting conditions that you need to specify and a number of other factors (such as number of faces, etc.). Be aware that a quality index of 3 is usually very high, and you should try with lower values when testing.

Parameters

Process

  • Shadows: enables shadows from light sources.
  • Direct only: only direct light sources will cast shadows.
  • Daylight: includes daylight calculations in the solution file.
  • Sky light accuracy: sky light is computed by a mesh representing the sky dome. This slider controls how fine this mesh is.
  • Daylight through openings only: daylight will be calculated only through those surfaces indicated as windows or openings in the model.

Receiver

  • Min/Max: minimum and maximum size of the sides of the mesh elements.
  • Subdivision Contrast Threshold: If the lighting values on the vertices of a single surface are greater than the threshold, lightscape will subdivide the mesh into smaller patches.

Source

  • Min/Accuracy: It controls the minimum size of the elements emitting light (both direct and indirect light sources) and the accuracy of the subdivision.
  • Shadow grid size controls the number of rays between a light source and a receiver.
