Douglas House...
...by
Allison Stamides
The Douglas House is situated on the steep shores of
Lake Michigan and is surrounded by a large number of conifers.
It appears like a machine contradicting the natural world,
both in color and geometry, therefore asserting its presence
but also contradicting the beauty of the landscape.
Because of the steep slope you enter the house at the top floor,
which is also the only visible part from the road. The volume
below contains five more stories and 4,500 square feet of living
space. Once you enter the house you can see both the living and
the dining levels, and a large roof deck overlooking Lake
Michigan. A curved skylight between the entry level and the roof
deck, together with the tall smokestacks of the fireplace,
help frame the view of the lake.
